About this artifact

The cooper needed many tools, including a wooden mallet or hammer, to create the casks, or barrels used to store whale oil in the holds of a ship. This type of mallet was also known as a caulking mallet, used to put caulking between the planks of the vessel's hull to keep it watertight.
