About this artifact

William Tripp wrote: "At this call, from the steward, the boys of the watch lined up before the galley and received their "grub." Each one had an enamel ware pan, cup, and an iron spoon. The boys took their food forward and ate it sitting on deck. In bad weather the forecastle is their dining [room]."
