About this artifact

When whaleships would meet at sea, they would report to each other such information as how long they had been out, how many barrels of oil they had and where they were from. Ships' logbooks often recorded that information. This is a notation in Captain Henry Manter's logbook for the voyage of the Ship Virginia in 1847-1851. He has stamps depicting a bark and a ship. He wrote down the information; "Barque Peru. N'tucket Capt. Fisher 10 mo 200 Sperm also Ship Corrinthain N.Bed. Capt. Arbington 9 mo out 300 sperm."
