About this artifact

Seamen often carved decorative items out of whalebone or teeth to take home as gifts. This is a decorative jagging wheel, shaped like a serpent. Another name for this item is a pastry wheel. The wheel was used to cut and shape pastry dough and the tines of the fork were to pierce the crust of a pie in order to release steam during baking.
