This document is a list of the flag signals used by the crew of the Bark John P. West, captained by Thomas Hallet in the late 1880's. It tells where and how a signal flag will be flown to indicate what those on board the ship want to communicate to the crew in the whaleboats. For example, some signals tell where whales are in relation to the ship, others may tell the boats to return to the ship.
