About this artifact

Logbook keepers would note the number of whales seen and caught by stamping in the logbook. This stamp is carved out of wood. On one end it has a Sperm whale and on the other it has a whale's tale. The tail stamp would be used to show they had seen but not caught a whale. The Sperm whale stamp would be used to indicate they had caught a whale. This stamp has a cut-out in the whale's body into which they would write with ink how many barrels of oil the whale produced.
