About this artifact

A swift, sometimes called an umbrella swift, works like a pair of out-stretched arms holding a skein of yarn so that it can be wound into a ball. It expands outward to be used and folds in for storage. Scrimshaw swifts like this were made out of whales' bones for loved ones back home.
