About this artifact

This image is from the logbook from the ship Virginia's whaling voyage between 1847 and 1851. It is of two whale stamps, depicting the 6th and 7th whales caught on the voyage. The center of the stamp shows how many barrels of oil were obtained from each whale after trying out the oil. The logbook was kept by the ship's captain, Henry Manter. Logbook entry was made on June 25th, 1848, cruising off Point Galera in Central America.
