Ship's Damage Survey

At the request of W. Geo M Seabury, Master of the American Barque "President" of New Bedford. from Fayal. laden with stores and utensils for Whaling. now at anchor in the bay of Gibraltar; and bound on a Whaling cruise. We the Undersigned did this day proceed on board said vessel for the purpose of holding a survey on losses and damages sustained. The said Master having informed us that same was caused by collision on the night of the 26th Inst being then in Lat 36.21 h and Long 4.54 West by a barque name and Nation unknown. Having then and there carefully and minutely inspected same do hereby certify that we find as follows / viz / Jibboom; Flying Jibboom; spritsail yard; cutwater; figure head; head knees and rails / on both sides / port and starboard catheads House chocks; from outside planks / on the starboard bow / starboard fore channel; channel plates; and bolts; mainsail; covering board; starboard foremast skid; starboard quarter boat; lanyards of forerigging; Jib queys; stay; martingale stays and backropes; bobstays; bowsprit shrouds; bobstay plates / copper / six bulls eyes / ironshapped / Jib; Flying Jib; fore topsail; and square main sail. all more or less torn; broken; started; twisted; chafed and injured. Starboard lower anchor with about 15 fathoms of chain cable (lost). We do therefore recommend for the benefit of whomever it may concern That the ship be lightened forward sufficient to bring the scarf of the cutwater above water. and further that all the above mentioned losses and damages be repaired and replaced by new.
