Back to the Pacific

The Roman arrived in Honolulu from the Arctic in the fall of 1870. After sending barrels of whale oil back to New Bedford and refitting for another 'between season cruise,' the ship prepared to depart with the Jernegan family on board on December 10, 1870.

Laura had continued to do her lessons under her mother's supervision, making only one journal entry during this period on land, on Sept. 26. However, her growth as a student is very evident in the next chapter "On Board the Roman Again."
