Chicken, Mice and Visitors, Cont.

The wife of Captain Benjamin Dexter of the Emily Morgan had books and candy for the children. The next day the children made their own visit to the other ship. Laura returned with playing cards and a bottle of hair oil, but she forgot to bring the dog Mrs. Dexter had given her!

On whaleships, like other seagoing vessels, rats and mice were found, eating the food meant for humans. It's no wonder that Captain Jernegan attempted to trap as many of them as he could.

The weather often changed quickly. Laura reported that it was quite pleasant one moment and in the next, it became quite rough. Conditions, however, weren't so bad that her Papa couldn't make a bookcase or fix a water closet.
