This image of the American Flag has 48 stars representing the 48 United States, in 1917. In 1910, the flag had just 46 stars, with Oklahoma the most recent state to join the Union. On July 4, 1912, Arizona and New Mexico became states and the flag then included 48 stars. Eventually, on July 4, 1959 Alaska became the 49th state and on July 4, 1960 Hawaii was admitted making the total number of stars to date 50.
