Walrus live in the shallow waters near ice flows and like whales have a layer of blubber under the skin that protects them from cold. Similar to the whale, the walrus has played a prominent role in the cultures of many indigenous people. In the 19th & 20th centuries walrus were exploited for their blubber and ivory. Their tusks, made of ivory, and have growth rings that tell their age.
