Lookout

New Bedford Whaling Museum

Also known as the "lookout hoops", the lookouts were located on the main and foremasts. The lookouts consisted of a small platform, with metal hoops as a railing. Here, crew members could see a long way, scanning the horizon for whales and other ships. Crew members alternated turns as lookouts, as part of the watch schedule. This photo was taken during the filming of "Down to the Sea in Ships" in 1923.
