The ship's captain also served as the ship's doctor, setting broken bones, performing basic surgeries, extracting teeth and prescribing opiates for pain. The danger for infection was great and sometimes whole crews were wiped out by diseases. The cost of the medicine chest was subtracted from the pay of the crew.
