A piece of fabric sewn together and fitted to the spars and rigging of a vessel so as to convert the force of the wind into forward motion of the vessel. There are two types of sails; square sails which hang from yards (such as the topsail in the picture) and fore-and-aft-sails, which sit upon gaffs (spars) and are of a more triangular shape.
