Steerage on a whaler refers to the quarters of the boatsteerers (harpooners), blacksmith, cooper, steward, carpenter, cook and cabin boy. It was entered through the after hatch. Steerage was located just forward of the main cabin and officers' quarters. On the port (left) side, it had bunk rooms. On the starboard (right) side of this section was a workroom and storage for tools etc.
