On the 29th of October 1868 we (Your father Laura and Prescott and me sailed from New Bedford in the Ship Roman. Laura was six years old and Prescott was twenty two months.

We stopped a few days at the Parker House Prescott threw his kitten out of the window and it ran away, but we found another for him.

We were none us sick on the voyage, and in pleasant weather we enjoyed being on deck and watching the sailors at work, and there was always the prospect of seeing whales.

I used to teach Laura in the morning and she learned very quickly. We had a small room
